The Scoop on Poop - #4
By Susan Bashor

It’s 5:30 on Friday night and the Sweet Pea group has worked a long, monstorous week (all of them are on over time) and the phone rings one more time. “Yes, my name is Mr. Fix-It and I was wondering if you could come over here and clear my kitchen sink?” Turns out Mr. Fix-It has been working on this problem for the last two days. To begin with, he buys Draino and trys to get his sink unclogged. When this doesn’t work he rents a snake and tries to get his sink unclogged. The plumbing is completely torn out from under the sink. The p-trap fell apart in his hands. Frustrated, he finally gives it up and as I mentioned, calls Sweet Pea at 5:30 on Friday night. Talk about frustrated... Yes, we offer emergency services but does this qualify? Could Mr. Fix-It have saved himself a few days and a few dollars by calling us when the problem first surfaced (surfaced get it?)?

Drains run slow and back up for a variety of reasons including old age (kind of like humans). Homeowners who have older plumbing can be equipped with the lovely “orange berg pipe” which basically deteriorates after years of use. Grease, hair and soap accumulation are also major culprits in slow tubs, sinks and laundry drains. Got trees? Could be roots in the line. Logically, after 10 years of absorbing everything you’ve given it, a drain has a right to slow down and deserves a good cleaning.

The decision to try to attack this home maintenance project yourself or have a professional do it is a big one. It’s been our experience that most homeowners waste a lot of time and money messing with the problem and in the end wind up calling our Sweet Pea professionals out to the scene of the back up. My advice would be to save yourself the anguish and the extra dollars and call Sweet Pea right away. We know how to get you flowing.

On another note, but still poop speak, when planning to entertain, portable Sweet Pea’s should be high on your list, right behind food and drink. After all, what goes in always comes out. Sweet Pea’s come in a variety of colors and options. Hand gel dispensers are a crowd pleaser as well as full fledged sink units with soap and paper towels. Portable toilets have come a long way. Another pleasing set up is to rent a men’s and women’s portable toilet and then to set what we call a “free standing” sink somewhere else on the site so that guests have the opportunity to wash up even if they don’t care to use a portable Sweet Pea.

For homeowners living on septic, renting a portable toilet saves harsh wear and tear on your septic system as well. Rather than begrudgingly offering sanitation, putting on a flashy display and the appropriate number of units for your event will keep people from leaving the event in search of facilities.

Finally, when you do call and order your Sweet Pea’s, try to keep in mind that it is a rare case that a group, school, organization, fund raiser or non-profit association calls and doesn’t ask for a discount or donation. Bear in mind that cleaning and renting portable toilets is what we do for a living. There are costs involved in providing this service and we simply cannot donate and discount every portable toilet that leaves the yard. If we can’t help your group this year, it is because we’ve already helped out 300 others. Thanks for appreciating what we can do for our communities and understanding that we cannot do it all.

Happy flushing and don’t forget to e-mail us with any questions or comments or give us a call at 728-3533 or 961-3377.

Remember, it’s not glamourous but somebody’s got to do it!
