The Scoop on Poop - #26
By Susan Bashor-Reese
Don’t you love torturing your kids? Mine have just sat through a “walk down memory lane” as we “treated” them to the album experience. They had never seen one, nor had they ever heard one. Cole was quick to grasp the cue knob, which lowers and raises the needle to the album. Imagine their excitement as we played one album after another, some in better condition than others... Bad Company’s Demolition Angels (what a great ride); Gary Wright’s “Dreamweaver”; Al Stewart’s “Year of the Cat”; and let’s not forget The Best of Bread. Yes guys, I know what you’re thinking. That’s okay, Dad hooked them up with Spirit, Fleetwood Mac and E.L.O.... so they can be “balanced”.
I miss albums, I almost forgot how to clean one. Spinning albums is a bit more work then popping in a CD, they take more care, they are more delicate. Your home takes care too. When you see the shingles falling off the roof, you know that is a sign that the roof needs repaired. When your drains are running slow, you should look at and accept that as a sign that something bad is going to happen if you continue to ignore it. No, the roof won’t fall in, but... Weather you are on city sewer or are the proud owner of an individual septic treatment plant, slow drains happen. Detergents, hair, grease.. stuff, build up over time and eventually can plug lines causing immeasurable distress and financial pinch when they finally decide to back up.
Effluent filters are required for a reason and if you have one, trying to beat the system will eventually beat you. Don’t rig your effluent filter, pay backs are something I can’t put words to. Living on septic is, overall, much more affordable than living on city sewer and paying that monthly bill, so appreciate that and take care of the maintenance issues. Regular septic pumpings (depending on the age of the system and the number of bodies using it) plus regular cleaning of the effluent filter are key to the success and longevity of your system.
Don’t forget to plan ahead for sanitation at any function you are involved with. Most people tend to think about food, drink, lawn chairs, entertainment, etc., long before they think about portable restrooms. If your event does not have adequate and orderly Sweet Pea’s, your attendees will leave early so that they can go somewhere pleasant to pee. Just a thought...
What’s the morale of today’s story? Take care of your old stuff, including albums and relatives (I listened to my 94 year old Great Aunt talk for an hour and a half today and if that makes her day that much better, than it was worth the time) Take care of your home, including sewer lines and septic systems. When in doubt? Call us professionals who know which way things flow....
Diddy wop, diddy wop...
