The Scoop on Poop - #11
By Susan Bashor

Spring is here and love is in the air... at least it was at some point in the recent past by the looks of all those blushing brides-to-be ordering portable Sweet Pea’s for their receptions and the plethora of mothers-to-be glowing all around town. Love, should we even go there?

I once read in a book that I should love my bills. The principal being not to begrudge our obligations, rather appreciate that we are in a position to incur them, thus being overjoyed to take proper care of said debt. Do you love your bills? Your car? Your boat? Your lawn and garden? How’s about that septic? There’s an age old adage that reminds us “there’s a fine line between love and waste...” or something like that.

Can you appreciate the important role it plays in keeping you sane? Do you love your septic? Enough to take good care of it till death (or a realtor) do you part? Have you taken proper care of it over time (in sickness and in health)? Ah, there are all kinds of love aren’t there? First there’s puppy love, sort of knowing it’s there but not taking it too seriously. This is not enough love to satisfy your home’s treatment systems needs. Then you can also experience a more passionate love. This can be a healthy, long lasting love that perseveres through good times and bad and in the end works for you because you worked for it.

Just like any relationship, I’d encourage you to maintain and nurture the one you have with your septic. This is one sensitive partner who doesn’t handle neglect well. In fact, when this system rages it’s truly uglier than you ever thought your partner is when he or she screams.

If you begin to have trouble with your relationship with your septic and need to go outside the home for help, don’t hesitate to call Sweet Pea for professional counseling. You can even lie on your couch while we work through the issues.

I don’t care for words like “have to”, “obligated” and “work”, they sound too negative and they definitely put me on the defensive. However, in love and in life, we do put ourselves in the position of “having to” do certain things in order to keep them in working order and we “obligate” ourselves to the people in our life that we care about. In these contexts, its palatable. Do you “have to” pump your septic regularly? YES! Are you obligated to? No, there are no laws and no septic police. However, if you don’t, be assured you will be “obligated” to the carpet cleaner, the septic pumper, your loved ones, the dog and probably the neighbors for the rest of your life when the thing gets fed up for lack of affection attention and decides it’s had enough.

Happy Spring! Take good care of the people and things you love and remember to appreciate and maintain the relationships plus the “other stuff” in your life that you are obligated to. Preventative maintenance is a wise man’s course. Reactionary is just plain uncalled for.
